Bollywood and cricket have always had a love affair and the latest chapter was written on Instagram. Actor Varun Dhawan threw his weight behind Indian batter Shreyas Iyer after the middle-order star was left out of India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2025.

Not only was Iyer not in the main squad but he wasn’t even picked among the reserves, a move that left fans scratching their heads.

Varun Dhawan Shares Emotional Reel In Support of Shreyas Iyer

Iyer’s omission from India's Asia Cup 2025 squad has been the talk of the town. After all, the 30-year-old has been in cracking form. As captain of Punjab Kings, he led from the front in IPL 2025, taking his side to their first final since 2014.

He piled up 604 runs in 17 matches at an average of 50.33 and a blazing strike rate of 175.07. Six fifties, a bagful of classy knocks and ice-cool leadership, Iyer looked like a man who had done everything possible to earn his spot back. Yet, when the squad was announced, his name was missing.

To voice his support, Varun Dhawan posted a reel on his Instagram story, showing clips of Iyer speaking candidly about his career ups and downs. The reel captured moments where Iyer opened up about being dropped, how he kept fighting when doors seemed shut and how he has always believed in backing himself.

From IPL Heroics To National Snub

What makes the decision even more puzzling is Iyer’s recent record. He might have been out of India’s T20 setup since December 2023, but he is no stranger to big-match pressure.

He was the highest run-getter for India in the Champions Trophy earlier this year, scoring 243 runs in five innings at an average of 48.60. And if you look back further, he led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL 2024 title before guiding Punjab Kings to the final in 2025.

Iyer’s absence from the Asia Cup has already sparked debates in cricket circles. Former cricketers have voiced their support and now with Varun Dhawan joining the chorus, the noise is only getting louder.

The Asia Cup snub may sting now but it also shows how unpredictable Indian cricket selection can be. Iyer has been there, done that and proved himself in crunch moments. With fans, pundits and now Bollywood stars in his corner, it’s clear the story is far from over.
