After the Hundred 2025 has been wrapped up, the English players have shifted their focus to the upcoming limited-overs series against South Africa. As the first ODI match of the series is all set to be played on September 2, players are grinding hard.
Having missed England’s white-ball setup for long time, Zak Crawley and Jordan Cox will sit out the upcoming series against the Proteas. Just ahead of the series, captain Harry Brook backed their chances of coming back, citing their performance in the recently concluded 2025.
Brook Backs Crawley And Cox For England’s Limited Overs Squad
Despite exceptional success in Test cricket, Zak Crawley dazzled for England, but his success in the white-ball formats remained limited. While his T20I debut is still on hold, he made his last ODI against the West Indies in 2023. But the recently ended Hundred 2025 witnessed a different edition of Crawley. He ended as the third-highest run scorer of the tournament, scoring 280 runs in nine matches.
Jordan Cox, the top scorer in The Hundred 2025 with 367 runs, hasn’t featured in England’s ODI squad since last year. After they missed out on being in England’s limited-overs series against South Africa, captain Harry Brook backed their chances of a comeback, citing their consistency, as reported by ESPNcricinfo.
“Everybody's in the mix: whoever does well. He [Crawley] obviously has the attributes that we're talking about: putting pressure on the bowlers with their good and bad balls; he can manipulate the field really well; he's good against fast bowling and he's good against spin. He's got all the attributes to play white-ball [cricket] for England,” he said.
“It's the same with everybody. Everybody's been talking about Jordan Cox: he's obviously an unbelievable player, alongside Creeps. You've just got to keep on doing it, and be as consistent as you can for a long period of time… It's good to have competition [for places],” he added.
England gears up to face the Proteas in a three-match ODI series starting September 2, kicking off their journey toward the 2027 World Cup. As the first match of the series is set to take place at Headingley, Leeds, both will look forward to a positive start.
