Shubman Gill couldn’t have scripted a better start to his life as Test captain. At just 25, in foreign conditions, with the weight of leadership and expectations on his shoulders. Gill not only handled the heat but dished out some of his own.

First came the century in Leeds. Then, came Edgbaston, where he let his bat do all the talking. Gill piled on 269 in the first innings, followed it up with a 161 in the second, and led India to a thumping 336-run win to level the series.

Dinesh Karthik Sees Shades Of Virat Kohli In Shubman Gill

Forget dipping his toes, Shubman Gill has dived straight into the deep end of Test captaincy. And if you ask Dinesh Karthik, it already feels familiar.

Speaking on the Sky Cricket podcast, Karthik saw shades of a certain Virat Kohli in Gill’s approach.

“Athers, you spoke about Virat Kohli. I met him a few days ago, and this talk about captaincy came up,” DK said to Michael Atherton as quoted by Hindustan Times.

“He said people think ‘I’m a great Test cricketer. I enjoyed my Test batting, which I did, but the fact is that getting my captaincy was the best thing to happen in my life.’ Why I am saying this is that the same line was used by Shubman Gill.”

That’s not just a coincidence. It’s a reflection of how deeply Gill has taken to his new role. He is not playing despite the added burden, he is thriving because of it.

Karthik also revealed how Gill’s mindset has evolved post captaincy.

“He said ‘I used to bat differently, but now that I’ve got captaincy, I almost think this is what my team requires, rather than me wanting to do something individually as a batter.’ I said wow, this is something for which the world of cricket has to take notice,” added DK, who has known Gill since his KKR days.

That is the sign of a true leader. Not chasing personal milestones but reading the match situation and adjusting gears accordingly.

Gill’s maturity, according to Karthik, is what sets him apart so early in his captaincy career.

“Here is a man who has the appetite, he’s got the skill, he’s got the technique, but now he’s got the mindset as well. I’m the captain, I’m going to lead from the front, lead off the front foot.”

Gill may still be new to this gig, but the signs are crystal clear. He is not just filling in, he is owning the role. And if his Edgbaston masterclass is anything to go by, India’s future in whites is in solid hands.

Eyes Now On Lord’s

After levelling the series in style, India and their young skipper now head to the home of cricket. And you can bet your last dime that Shubman Gill has already got his eye on another chapter in the history books. Because for someone who said captaincy changed his mindset, the challenge at Lord’s will be another test he is likely itching to ace.
