'Drama Karo…' - Wasim Akram Slams Abdullah Shafique's Ultra-Aggressive Celebration

Former Pakistan cricketer and all-time great Wasim Akram has taken potshots at Abdullah Shafique for making a questionable gesture during a recent PSL 2024 game.

Shafique, serving as a substitute fielder for defending champions Lahore Qalandars in their match against Islamabad United, took a sharp catch at slip to dismiss Imad Wasim. However, the 24-year-old celebrated his catch by putting a finger on his lips, thus making a gesture to silence his critics.

Shafique’s gesture seems to have irked former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram, who recalled the cricketer’s repeated fielding goof-ups when Pakistan team toured Australia early this year.

Wasim Akram asks Shafique to “join drama school”

Abdullah Shafique was part of a travelling Pakistan group to Australia back in December 2023 for a three-match Test series. While the young batting star notched up a fine half-century at the MCG, he dropped a number of crucial catches to let off David Warner and Mitchell Marsh in the match.

Shafique’s fielding blunders led to Pakistan’s 79-run defeat at the venue, before his twin ducks at Sydney led to a 3-0 series defeat for the visitors.

Legendary Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram, seemingly irked by Abdullah Shafique’s PSL 2024 celebration, asked the youngster to leave cricket and join a “drama company” instead.

Akram also asked Shafique to show his accountability for the catches he dropped in Australia.

“Brilliant catch indeed. But someone tell him, cricket chhado te aake drame wich kamm karo (Leave cricket and work in some drama company). He should speak about the catches he dropped in Australia if he wants to silence the critics by putting his fingers on his lips, or whatever it was," Wasim Akram said while speaking on A Sports.

Regardless, Abdullah Shafique’s PSL 2024 catch sustained Islamabad United’s batting collapse in Rawalpindi, where they fell 17 runs short of their target to hand Lahore Qalandars their first win of the season.
