Team India ended their World Cup campaign on a sour note against the mighty Australians on November 19 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Despite heading into the grand finale as hot favorites, the two-time champions succumbed to one of their heaviest defeats which left over a billion Indian fans worldwide heartbroken.

Following the conclusion of the 2023 World Cup final, many legends and cricketing experts have tried to decode the possible reasons why the home side faltered after enduring an unassailable 10-match winning streak. Some of the legendary cricketers including Ricky Ponting, Nasser Hussain, and Harbhajan Singh indicated that the pitch ploy may have backfired for the home side, while Gavaskar and Sehwag opined that the lackluster 50-run plus stand between Kohli and Kl Rahul proved to be a turning point in the game.

However, it was Wasim Akram who highlighted yet another erroneous move made by Rohit Sharma that cost them the World Cup. At the fall of Virat Kohli’s wicket, experts believed that Suryakumar should have walked out to bat at number 6. Right throughout the competition, this has been the line-up for India. But during their do-or-die encounter against Australia, they deviated from their strategy.

Wasim Akram stated the following below as he failed to understand why the dynamic batter was moved down the order.

“I mean he  (SKY) is playing purely as a batter there. I could have understood the move if Hardik was there in the line-up," Akram said.

In the final, Surya could only accumulate 18 runs at a very impoverished strike rate of only 64.29 as India failed to accelerate through in the death overs.
