"Can't Sail Two Boats At Once": Shahid Afridi Wants PCB Chair Mohsin Naqvi To Step Down

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has called for PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi to relinquish one of his dual roles, as Federal Interior Minister or cricket board chief, to ensure focused leadership. Afridi’s remarks followed a meeting with Pakistan’s Army Chief, General Asim Munir, where condolences were exchanged over the latter’s mother’s demise.

The ex-skipper argued that juggling two high-profile positions dilutes effectiveness, emphasizing cricket’s importance as a national morale-booster.

Afridi Stresses On Focus Amid Naqvi’s Expanding Portfolio

Afridi's stance comes days after Naqvi added another feather to his cap, becoming the first Pakistani since 2008 to helm the Asian Cricket Council. Afridi, renowned for his candid opinions, acknowledged Naqvi’s passion for cricket reforms but cautioned against overextension.

"In my view, holding two positions at the same time prevents him from giving his full attention. You should choose between the Interior Ministry and the PCB. If you concentrate on just one role, it will serve Pakistan better.”

With Naqvi now balancing PCB chairmanship, the ACC presidency, and federal ministerial duties, Afridi warned that divided attention risks underperformance.

The 2017 Champions Trophy-winning captain highlighted cricket’s role as Pakistan’s “vital entertainment source” and urged streamlined leadership to harness its potential.

“You can’t sail two boats at once. Focusing on one role will allow you to handle matters more effectively. He has great passion and determination for improving cricket, but he must focus on one thing for the benefit of the country. Cricket is a full-time job, and both are huge responsibilities. Two big tasks cannot be done at the same time,” Afridi further added.

While praising Naqvi’s sincerity, Afridi’s critique reflects growing scrutiny over administrative multitasking in a nation where cricket governance remains politically charged.

ACC Welcomes Historic Appointment

Meanwhile, for those unaware, the Asian Cricket Council confirmed Naqvi’s elevation in a statement, “Mr. Mohsin Naqvi's appointment ushers in a new chapter of leadership for Asian cricket.”

Meanwhile, Shahid Afridi’s intervention amplifies debates around Naqvi’s workload as Pakistan cricket navigates post-Champions Trophy reforms and the ACC presidency’s regional demands.
