'Bumrah Should Have Been Given A Break': Gavaskar Lambasts At Team Management

The Indian team's recent decision to field Jasprit Bumrah against Bangladesh in the ongoing World Cup 2023 has left many puzzled, including cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar. The move has raised eyebrows especially since a critical World Cup match against a formidable New Zealand side awaits the team in Dharamsala on Sunday.

IND vs BAN: Gavaskar voices concerns over Bumrah playing vs Bangladesh

Bumrah, known for his lethal pace and accuracy, had undergone surgery for a back injury in New Zealand and was on a lengthy hiatus from international cricket. His recent return, just about two months ago, was seen as a significant boost for India, especially with the World Cup taking place on home turf.

Given Bumrah's value to the team and his recent injury history, many anticipated a more cautious approach from the team management regarding his game time.

Weighing in on the decision during the pre-match show, Gavaskar pointed out the three-day rest that the team had between their encounters against arch-rivals Pakistan and Bangladesh. He speculated that the management's decision might have been influenced by this gap, believing it to be adequate rest for key players.

"They are playing the same team. The only question would have been that because they are playing a big team like New Zealand in a couple of days' time whether Bumrah should have been given a break. Obviously, they had three days between the Pakistan game and this match against Bangladesh. They feel that's enough. So it's fine," said Gavaskar.

Meanwhile, during the toss, the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma voiced his satisfaction with the current team's composition and performance. He underlined the consistent performance of the players, both mentally and physically, and expressed his unwillingness to tamper with a winning combination. Rohit reiterated the team's objective to ride on the existing momentum throughout the tournament.

"Don't see any reason to change it (the XI). That's important in this WC, keeping everybody in good space. The boys are in good shape, have good mental space as well and are enjoying the cricket. So far so good, we want to continue this momentum," stated Rohit.

As it turned out, in Match 17 of the World Cup 2023 hosted at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, India put forth a masterclass performance. The team cruised to a decisive seven-wicket victory over Bangladesh.

Virat Kohli played a stunning knock, smashing an unbeaten century and guiding India to their target of 257 with ease. Bumrah, the man under the spotlight, put in an impressive bowling stint, delivering figures of 2-41 in his 10 overs.
