Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman has addressed his recent tweet in support of Babar Azam, linked to his exclusion from the national team. Zaman clarified that his tweet was not intended as criticism of the board.

The left-handed batter, who was omitted from the Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) central contracts list for the 2024-25 season has been at the centre of talks because of controversial allegations against the biases of selectors. However, in a recent media interaction, he clarified the explosive tweet against the PCB.

Zaman Clears Air On Controversial Tweet

Fakhar Zaman, in a tweet published shortly before the Pakistan squad for the England Test series was announced, publicly backed Babar Azam amid criticism from journalists and former cricketers. Some reports speculated that this tweet might have contributed to his exclusion from tours to Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa.

"I did think later it would have been better if I hadn’t posted the tweet. But people misunderstood it as criticism of the board’s decision, which is 100% wrong." Fakhar said in an interview with a private media outlet.

He explained that his tweet was directed at journalists and former cricketers who had called for dropping Babar Azam from the Pakistan squad.

"I tweeted before the team announcement—about three days earlier. I saw some journalists and ex-players saying Babar should be dropped. I felt they were disregarding his contributions, so I responded. It wasn't a criticism of the board," Zaman explained.

Meanwhile, Fakhar also addressed concerns about his fitness, revealing that he had been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism.

"I had an understanding with the PCB that I would rest for two months. I wasn't aware of my condition when the team was departing for Australia. Later, I found out I was suffering from hyperthyroidism. Now, I am thankful I didn't travel with the team because you cannot perform in such a condition."

As Zaman clarified that he had requested a two-month rest, it puts his candidature for Champions Trophy 2025 in doubt as the tournament is scheduled to begin on February 19.

Fakhar Shines In Champions T20 2024 Cup

Meanwhile, Fakhar Zaman showcased a powerful performance in the Champions T20 Cup, helping UMT Markhors reach the final with a 29-run victory over Nurpur Lions. Fakhar scored 89 runs off 64 balls, including five sixes and nine fours. He also played commendable knocks of 49, 53, and 39 in the league that showcased his explosiveness. The final will be played on December 25, where Zaman will be expected to show his colours with the bat again.
