Former Indian cricketer Naman Ojha's father, Vinay Ojha, has been sentenced to seven years in jail for being a part of the significant embezzlement scandal at the Bank of Maharashtra. The Multai Additional Sessions Court pronounced this verdict on December 24, over a decade after the fraudulent activity went public in 2013.
The Embezzlement Case
The incident occurred at the Bank of Maharashtra's Joulkheda branch in Betul, Madhya Pradesh, where a group of individuals embezzled Rs 1.25 crore. Vinay Ojha, then assistant manager, was one of the six people accused of the crime. The embezzlement scheme was orchestrated by Abhishek Ratnam, who, along with Ojha, used fake accounts to siphon off large sums of money.
The Verdict of the Court
The court sentenced the four accused, including Vinay Ojha, to seven years in prison. Apart from the jail, Ojha has to pay a fine of Rs 7 lakh. Ten years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 80 lakh were given to mastermind Abhishek Ratnam.
This case took more than a decade to be sorted out in courts, the investigation facing such hurdles that the tragic death of a key witness, Dinanath Rathore, cashier of the bank, added to them.
Effect on Naman Ojha
While Naman Ojha, a former cricketer who played for Rajasthan Royals (RR), Delhi Daredevils, and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL, has kept a low profile regarding the case, the sentence is a significant blow to his family. This legal battle, which has lingered for 11 years, finally reached its conclusion with the court’s decision.
