After ending the Women’s World Cup journey heartbreakingly, Bangladesh Women returned to their homeland, but a recent issue has shaken Bangladesh cricket. Senior player Jahanara Alam has levelled serious allegations against current skipper Nigar Sultana Joty.

Making the shocking claim, Alam said that Joty physically mistreated the junior players of the side. The Bangladesh Cricket Board, however, has firmly dismissed the accusations, adding another layer of complexity to the controversy.

Jahanara Alam makes a massive allegation against Nigar Sultana

The turmoil in Bangladesh cricket is still far from over, as the Bangladesh Women’s side had a forgettable outing in the recently concluded Women’s World Cup 2025. Ending their journey in the group stage, they returned to their homeland, and a massive storm affected the cricket board. Veteran Bangladesh player Jahanara Alam made a shocking claim against current Bangladesh Women's skipper Nigar Sultana Joty.

Speaking to a Bangladeshi newspaper named ‘Kaler Kantha’, Jahanara accused Joty of physically abusing the junior players.

“This is nothing new. Joty beats up the juniors a lot. Even during this World Cup, the juniors told me, ‘No, I won’t do this again. Then I’ll have to get slapped again.’ I heard from some people, ‘I got beaten up yesterday.’ Even during the Dubai tour, she called a junior into the room and slapped her,” she said.

She further hinted that internal politics had been influencing the atmosphere inside the Bangladesh women’s team.

“Actually, I am not alone, everyone in the Bangladesh team is more or less a victim. Everyone’s suffering is different. Here, one or two people get advanced facilities and in some cases, only one person gets them. In 2021, the process of eliminating seniors like me along with a few others from the post-Covid camp began. Then I was made the captain of one of the three teams in the Bangladesh Games. The captains of the other two teams were Jyoti (Nigar Sultana) and Sharmin Sultana. The pressure on seniors started from then on,” she added.

Controversy takes a new turn as BCB denies the allegations

The allegations threw Bangladesh cricket into turmoil, prompting a swift and strong reaction from the Bangladesh Cricket Board. In a press release, BCB stated that as ‘ill-intentioned’.

“The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has taken note of recent remarks made in the media by a former member of the Bangladesh Women’s National Cricket Team, in which she has made a series of allegations against the current National Team Captain, players, staff and team management,” it said.

“The BCB categorically and strongly refutes these allegations, which are baseless, fabricated and devoid of any truth. The Board finds it unfortunate that such derogatory and scandalous claims have been made at a time when the Bangladesh Women’s Team is showing commendable progress and unity on the international stage,” it added.

Jahanara Alam has been away from Bangladesh’s national setup since December 2024. In 52 matches in her career, the right-arm medium bowler secured 48 wickets with an economy rate of 4.26. In 83 T20I matches, she secured 60 wickets with an economy rate of 5.69.
