Despite being one of the best captains in the world, Virat Kohli's stint as India's Test skipper came to an abrupt and controversial end. Kohli stepped down from his role as Team India leader after a narrow 1-2 loss in South Africa last year, which was embroiled in controversies.

As per reports, the then Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Sourav Ganguly had requested Kohli not to let go, however, the star batter refuted such claims in a presser leading into the Africa tour.

Now, in an interview with Aaj Tak, former India captain, Ganguly has opened up about his tenure as BCCI president and talked about the fiasco surrounding Kohli. The former BCCI President stated that the board was not prepared for Kohli to relinquish the post and that Rohit Sharma was the best option India had.

Here's what Ganguly said

"BCCI was not prepared for Virat Kohli leaving the Test captaincy. It was unexpected for us also after the South Africa tour. Only Virat Kohli can reveal why he left the captaincy. There is no point talking about this now because Virat Kohli left the Test captaincy. Selectors had to appoint an India captain. And Rohit was the best option at that time."

In 68 Tests as captain, Kohli won 40, lost 17, and drew 11 matches, making him one of the most successful leaders in world cricket of all time.
