Just when England’s dynamic pair of Joe Root and Harry Brook were going strong on Day 1 of the 5th Ashes Test at Sydney, a combination of lightning and light drizzle hampered the contest, as early tea was taken on the opening day, and the start of the third session was also delayed.
On a day that was going well for the visitors, the rain god decided to cut short their momentum as the players had to walk back to the dugout early with the entire square region covered.
Towards the end of the second session, dark clouds formed, and there was some lightning in Sydney, leaving the players frustrated. Lightning was followed by drizzle and the early rain predictions came true as Day 1 is likely to be spoiled by the rain god.
SCG weather updates as Day 1 set to be spoiled
Things are looking gloomy in Sydney and according to Accuweather, with dark clouds forming, the rain could intensify as time progresses, making the chance of the start of third session highly unlikely.
A heavy thunderstorm in Sydney was predicted, and it came true, and alongside it, there is a heavy chance of rain with thunderstorm warning already issued in the city.
How England dominated a rain-marred Day 1 at SCG
On a green top that got better after the first session, England won the toss and elected to bat first against a depleted Australian attack. However, within the first 57 runs, the visitors lost three wickets as they were pushed on the backfoot.
But two Yorkshire batters, Root and Brook forged a strong partnership and resurrected the sinking England ship as they added an unbeaten 154 runs for the fourth wicket with Brook batting on 78 and Joe Root unbeaten at 72 before rain god decided to interrupt the contest.
