Ashes 2023 | 'Gutted as Well as...': Ben Duckett On Missing Maiden Ashes Ton

Day of a comeback for England, hosts gained control over Australia on most parts of Day 2 of the ongoing Lord's Test of Ashes 2023 series. After bundling Australia out for 416, England's top-order provided the home side the best start, with Ben Duckett scoring a 98.

However, over-aggression cost the Three Lions in the dying moments of the second day, as Australia claimed wickets of Ollie Pope, Ben Duckett, and Joe Root quickly, heading into stumps at 278 for 4, still trailing by 138.

Duckett, who has been in rich form under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, missed out in his maiden Ashes century, falling two runs shy of his third Test ton.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the 28-year-old expressed his both disappointment and happiness, calling his knock his best ever.

Here's what Duckett said

"I'm gutted but I'd have taken that at the start of the day. I'm gutted as well as happy. It felt like it was probably my best knock so far. I'm just gutted Marnus hut the stumps the over before [when it could have gone for overthrows] - it was just meant to be after that I think.

It's a shame, I was just backing the way I was playing and I felt comfortable on the short ball, just ticking over and scoring off most deliveries. That one rushed me a bit and unfortunately it went straight to Warner."

In 12* Tests since 2016, Duckett has amassed 929 runs at an average of 46.45 with two centuries and six fifties. (*- ongoing)

England will resume Day 3 with Harry Brook and skipper Ben Stokes in the middle, batting on 45* and 17*
