India's star all-rounder Hardik Pandya smacked a six off the final delivery of the 36th over to send the fans into jubilation. In the end, the hosts finished the game comfortably, with four wickets and 11.2 overs to spare.

Hardik Pandya's Maximum Took India Closer To Victory

It all happened in the 36th over when leg spinner Adil Rashid dismissed India's KL Rahul off the fourth delivery of the over as the experienced batter played it back to Rashid, who took a brilliant catch diving forward. However, his celebration was short-lived as India's all-rounder Hardik Pandya walked out to the crease.

Hardik defended the first delivery but didn't wait long enough to play a big shot, and he went for a massive hit over the long-on region on the very next delivery. This six took India closer to the target, as they were already 231/5 after the end of 36 overs, with still 18 runs required for victory.

India lost two wickets in quick succession earlier and needed something to break the shackles which Adil Rashid had implied. Therefore, it came at the right time, as Indian fans went into a frenzy; shouting and jumping on their seats celebrating the six coming off the bat of Pandya.

Moreover, this maximum proved extremely crucial as India lost their set batter, Gill, for 87, two deliveries later, reducing them to 235/6 after 36.2 overs. However, India comfortably reached home with four wickets to spare, as a couple of boundaries in the 39th over came from the bat of Ravindra Jadeja.

India Takes First ODI With Four Wickets To Spare

Earlier in the day, England were bowled out for 248 in 47.4 overs, with Jos Buttler smashing 52 while Jacob Bethell was brilliant with 51, accompanied by Phil Salt at the top with 43.

From the Indian bowlers, debutant Harshit Rana and Jadeja picked three wickets apiece, helping India restrict the opposition to a below-par target.

From the Indian batting lineup, Gill was obviously outstanding with 87, while Shreyas Iyer's 50 and Axar Patel's 52 eased the chase for the hosts, who went home comfortably. Both these sides will next lock horns in the second ODI to be played in Cuttack on 9th February.
