Sai Sudharsan is having a dream IPL 2025 season. The 23-year-old Gujarat Titans batter has scored 509 runs in 11 matches and is second in the Orange Cap standings, but the actual story is the way he has enhanced his game this season compared to last year.

In 2024, Sudharsan scored 527 runs but felt he could do better. After a brilliant century against Chennai Super Kings, he wrote in his diary that he needed to be more explosive.

He felt he was starting slowly and not helping the team with fast starts. So, he decided to change his mindset, not his technique.

How Sai Sudharsan Transformed His Mindset?

The beginning of his mindset transformation was the TNPL. Sai Sudharsan used to work on being aggressive from ball one, without compromising on his natural game. This shift began during the TNPL, where he tried to bat more positively. Even though the start was rough, by the end of the tournament, he could see improvements.

“Last year, in certain innings, I was a bit slow. The pitches that we played also were a bit different to the others. And even the team situation was such that there were no great starts. We kept losing wickets and I wasn’t able to give good starts. I was slow to get off the block,"  Sudharsan told The Indian Express.

This season, Sudharsan’s strike rate is 153.31, which is much higher than last year. He has included new shots such as the paddle and reverse-sweep to play close lines of bowling. These have assisted him in scoring off even the best of balls.

"I realised that I’d have to push myself more; be a bit more explosive. So I went home and worked on the mindset of it. As you said, I didn’t change anything with my batting, but just brought more clarity. I wanted to bring the explosive element very early in the innings. If I could do it later, I could definitely do it at the beginning as well from ball one. From there on, I practiced with these thoughts in mind,” he added.

Sai now opens the batting for the Gujarat Titans, forming a solid pair with Shubman Gill. To learn more about opening in IPL, he spoke with Gill and Jos Buttler for tips on managing the powerplay and middle overs. Moreover, despite being close to winning the Orange Cap, Sudharsan says his focus is on helping his team.
