Babar Azam & Mohammad Rizwan
In a heartfelt social media tribute, Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter, Mohammad Rizwan has expressed his admiration and respect for Babar Azam, following Azam's decision to step down as the captain of the Pakistan cricket team.
Rizwan honours Babar's tenure as Pakistan's captain
The change in leadership came in the wake of Pakistan's exit from the ICC World Cup 2023, where the team failed to progress beyond the group stages.
Rizwan, known for his skill both behind the stumps and with the bat, took to the platform 'X' to share his thoughts. In his post, he referred to Azam as "Kaptaan, aap Dilo ke Kaptaan ho," which translates to "Captain, you are the captain of hearts."
He praised Azam for being "one of the greatest batsmen Pakistan has ever seen" and lauded his qualities of "honesty, love, integrity, thoughts, and efforts" during his tenure as captain. Rizwan concluded his message with a prayer for Azam's continued success, saying, "May you continue to shine for Pakistan, Ameen @babarazam258."
This change in leadership marks a new era for Pakistan cricket, with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announcing Shan Masood as the new Test captain and pacer Shaheen Afridi as the T20I captain. Rizwan himself is being considered a strong candidate for the ODI captaincy.
The decisions follow a challenging World Cup campaign, where Azam, despite his stature as a top batsman, struggled for form, scoring 320 runs in nine matches without a century.
Meanwhile, Pakistan are going to tour Australia for a three-match Test series, starting December 14 in Perth.
