Pakistan’s interim red-ball head coach, Azhar Mahmood, has hinted that the team could make minor changes to their playing XI for the second Test against South Africa. These tweaks could be inspired by pitch conditions.

The home team currently leads the two-match Test series 1-0, after a strong showing in the first Test. The second Test is set to be held at Rawalpindi, but Pakistan are looking to alter their winning combination.

Azhar Mahmood hints at a change in the playing XI

Speaking at the pre-match press conference on October 19, Pakistan coach Azhar Mahmood said the final playing XI would be decided after assessing the pitch on the morning of the game.

The former all-rounder also revealed that Pakistan could consider a 3-1 bowling combination, meaning three spinners and one pacer, depending on how the surface behaves.

“In this match, we’re waiting to see what can happen. We’ll decide the final XI after taking a look at the pitch. It looks quite dry, so there might be a change or two, but not too many—maybe just one at most. It’s possible we go with a 3-1 combination [three spinners and one pacer], but it hasn’t been decided yet,” Mahmood said.

Notably, in the first Test, Pakistan’s spinners dominated the proceedings in Lahore. Noman Ali picked up 10 wickets combined in 2 innings, while Sajid Khan claimed 5 wickets.

Even at Rawalpindi, the ground staff brought in large fans to dry the surface and prepare a spin-friendly wicket. As for change, Pakistan might drop Hasan Ali to fit in Abrar Ahmed and strengthen their spin attack.

Pakistan is taking the WTC cycle seriously

After having disastrous campaigns in the last 3 World Test Champions cycles, Pakistan are keen on contending for the final spot in the ongoing 2025-27 cycle.

Azhar Mahmood stressed the importance of performing well at home and collecting points that will benefit their rankings.

“As I mentioned earlier, our six home Tests will be crucial. We have to take each match step by step, as we will also play in challenging away conditions in places like the West Indies, Bangladesh, and England. Test cricket is about playing session by session. If we get that process right, the ultimate aim remains the same: winning the WTC," he added.

Currently, Pakistan are placed second on the WTC points table with 12 points in 1 Test.
