What if Rohit fails Bronco Test [Source: @SPORTYVISHAL/x.com]
Indian cricket fans are patiently waiting to witness their ODI captain, Rohit Sharma, in action, but they will have to wait for one more month, as the opener will next be seen on the field during the tour of Australia in October. Speculations have begun that the ODI series vs his favourite opponent, could be the last one for Rohit in the Blue jersey.
A few days earlier, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed that a new fitness test, called the Bronco Test, will be introduced in Indian cricket to monitor players’ fitness levels. It will check the cricketers’ stamina and endurance, and accordingly, the team will be selected for future tours.
There are no exceptions for this test, as even the likes of Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma, who are the senior players, have to go through the process for selection.
What is Bronco Test introduced by BCCI?
The Bronco Test, introduced by the BCCI, is a fitness drill used in Rugby. In this, the cricketers will run back and forth between the markers placed at 20, 40, and 60 metres, and they have to continue doing this for five times without stopping.
The board noticed that players were spending more time in the gym, rather than on the field, and hence, this system was introduced by the BCCI.
What if Rohit Sharma fails to clear the Bronco Test?
This is a completely new challenge for almost every single Indian player, and Rohit Sharma, the ODI captain, will also go through the process for the first time. However, what if he fails to clear the test?. Ideally, the BCCI has kept it to test the endurance of their players, and if the skipper of the team fails to complete the drill, there is a good chance that he might not be selected for the Australian tour.
Gautam Gambhir has given strict preference to fitness, and if he sticks to his philosophy, the ODI captain might struggle to get a place for the Australia tour, and it could also jeopardise his place in the 2027 ODI World Cup squad.
