Pakistan, as a cricketing nation, is known for manufacturing top-class fast bowlers. From Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis to Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah, there have been many speedsters who have done well for Pakistan over all these years and are still continuing to do the same.

The factory producing fast-bowlers has a specialisation as well, considering the quality of left-arm seamers have been manufactured in Pakistan. Earlier, there was Wasim Akram, Mohammad Amir, Wahab Riaz, Junaid Khan and now it's Shaheen Shah Afridi, who is leading the pace attack of the team.

Well, not every day is a good one, especially for the fast bowlers, the story has been the same for Shaheen Shah Afridi. Here at OneCricket, we have managed to find a few occasions where International cricket has given a hard time to the young Shaheen.

Let's have a look at the top 5 most expensive spells of Pakistan's Shaheen Shah Afridi in international cricket.

2/48 (4 overs) vs New Zealand, 2023 (T20I)

Earlier in the year 2023, Pakistan hosted a five-match T20I series against New Zealand. Pakistan, after winning the first two games, lost the third match as the Kiwis made a comeback in the series. The fourth game was abandoned due to rain and it all came down to the fifth and final T20I series, which was the only opportunity for the Men in Green to seal the series.

Despite posting a total of 193, Pakistan lost the game as Mark Chapman and James Neesham put up a show for the Audience and chased a huge score with four balls spare. In the process, Shaheen Shah Afridi, the premium fast-bowler of Pakistan went for too many runs and recorded his worst T20I bowling figures, as he leaked 48 runs in four overs with an economy of 12.

1/45 (4 Overs) vs South Africa, 2021 (T20I)

Here's another expensive spell of the left-arm speedster, where Shaheen went on to leak 45 runs in a T20I against South Africa in Johannesburg stadium. While batting first, the Proteas posted an above-par total of 188 runs with the help of half-centuries from Heinrich Klaasen and Aiden Markram.

Both Markram and Klaasen targetted the seamers of Pakistan, as Shaheen went for 45 runs and Haris Rauf went for 37 in three overs as well. Even though Shaheen took a wicket of Biljon, who scored a quick 34, he was miserable as he could not find the right lengths, and thus went on to leak many runs. However, his team went on to chase the score with exceptional batting and won the first T20I.

1/44 (4 Overs) vs West Indies, 2021 (T20I)

Back in 2021, while all the teams were preparing for the T20I World Cup, Pakistan toured West Indies for a four-match T20I series. Even though three of the four games could not take place due to the rain, only the second match depicted the result of the series. Pakistan while batting first posted a total of just 157.

Despite defending an average score, Shaheen Afridi went for 44 runs in his quota of four overs. Evin Lewis hammered him at the beginning of the innings and Nicholas Pooran did the rest beating by scoring 65 runs. In the process, Shaheen went for 44 runs and could only take one wicket. But Pakistan managed to defend the score and won the game by seven runs.

0/90 (10 Overs) vs New Zealand, 2023 (ODI World Cup 2023)

In the recently concluded ODI World Cup 2023, New Zealand smashed 401 runs against Pakistan in a must-win game for both sides. In the Chinnaswamy stadium, the Kiwis batted first and lashed out at the Pakistan bowlers, as Rachin Ravindra smashed a hundred and Kane Williamson got out for 95.

With the cameos from Chapman and Glenn Phillips, New Zealand posted a mammoth total. The Pakistan bowlers, especially Shaheen Shah Afridi suffered the most, as he was hammered for 90 runs in his 10 overs spell, which not only became his worst bowling figures but one of the most expensive spells in the history of ODI cricket.

Back in 2019, at the county ground of Bristol, Pakistan batted first in the fourth ODI of the five-match ODI series hosted by England. the Men in Green Posted a mammoth score of 358 runs with the help of Imam-ul-Haq's 151-run knock. England would have to do something miraculous to win this one and guess what, they did and won the game as well.

England in return smashed 358 runs in just 44.1 overs, as Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow gave a flyer of a start with a partnership of 159 runs which was helpful for England in setting up the chase and this very partnership took on Shaheen Afridi, who went on to leak 83 runs in his 10 overs spell.
