Tests are the epitome of our beautiful game of cricket that checks players' temperament. Test cricket becomes the ultimate battleground for the cricketers' skill and patience. Cricket history has witnessed many players who left us in awe with their poise and elegance; who played according to the match situation and conditions; who gave respect to the new ball.

However, we have also seen a flurry of batters who have believed in taking the attack to the opposition. With 'aggression is the best defense' as their mantra, they have etched their names as the most destructive batters in Test Cricket history. Here's our list of those aggressive batsmen in red/pink ball cricket.

#1  Sir Vivian Richards

While on one hand, West Indies’ pace quartet terrorized the opposition batters with lethal pace bowling, Sir Vivian Richards left no stone unturned with his batting. In an era where helmets were a rarely-used protective gear, Sir Richards mesmerized with his exquisite stroke play. In his career (1974-1991), he amassed 8,540 runs at an average of 50.23, with an impressive strike rate of 69.77.

#2  Virender Sehwag

The ‘Nawab of Najafgarh’ redefined Test cricket batting for the ‘Men In Blue’. Even with players like Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar to come later in the batting order, Sehwag took it upon himself and laid a strong foundation. With his fierce cut and pull shots, he took advantage of the typical Test matches’ fielding positions.

He is the only Indian batter to score two triple centuries in Test cricket. Moreover, he holds the record for the most number of sixes for an Indian in this format (91). It was only Sehwag who could dare to reach milestones with a six.

#3  Brian Lara

Brian Lara is another Caribbean to make this list. And why should he not? A highest score of 400*, 11,953 runs in 131 matches, and a strike rate of 60.51 is a testament to his prowess. Lara was adept at tearing apart both pace and spin bowling with his masterful stroke play.

#4  Adam Gilchrist

Adam Gilchrist is arguably one of the most destructive wicket-keeper batters to have played the game. The southpaw’s attacking play took the Aussies to a commanding position by piling on innings lead or scaling down the opposition’s total. He concluded his career with a strike rate of 81.95 and an average of 47.60, which is awe-inspiring.

#5  Brendon McCullum

Brendon McCullum revolutionised Test match batting for the New Zealand side. He did not allow the bowlers to settle with his attacking ploy. With 107 sixes to his name in this format, McCullum sits at the second position, just after Ben Stokes. His best knock (302) came against India at Wellington in the second innings of the Test. This performance allowed New Zealand to draw the match after being bowled out for a paltry 192 in their first installment.

#6 Ben Stokes

Ben Stokes is the man made for the big occasions, whether it be a World Cup final or a nail-biting Ashes test. Stokes is an intent merchant, and with the advent of the ‘Bazball’, his aggressive stroke play has received more fuel. Recently, he surpassed McCullum’s record of the most number of sixes in Tests. In 2019 at Leeds, Stokes exhibited why he’s one of the best in the business. His 135* (219 balls), featuring 11 fours and eight sixes, allowed England to scale down 359, with only a wicket left.

#7 Matthew Hayden

Australian domination in the 2000s might not have been possible without the presence of Matthew Hayden. The opening batter stood as an imposing figure in the top order and took the bowlers to the cleaners. His 380 (437 balls) against Zimbabwe is the second highest score in Test history. This knock featured 38 fours and 11 sixes, breaking the back of the Zimbabwean attack.

#8 Kevin Pietersen

Whenever the English side needed impetus in the middle order, they could rely on Kevin Pietersen. With his unorthodox play, Pietersen brought in a wave of change in England's textbook batting approach. With over 8,000 runs in 104 matches at a strike rate of 61.72, Pietersen makes our list of the most destructive batters.

#9  Chris Gayle

Besides being one of the most explosive white ball batters, Chris Gayle made Test cricket his own. He replicated his robust batting style in this format and left some whirlwind knocks in the record books. His penchant for occupying the crease for long gets well displayed in his two triple centuries. With over 7000 runs, a highest score of 333 and a strike rate of 60.26, Gayle cannot be left out of this list.

#10   David Warner

David Warner's contribution to the Australian side cannot be overshadowed by his involvement in the ball-tampering scandal.  His batting exploits have given his team thundering starts in many matches. Warner's ability to find the gaps and score boundaries at will is not hidden from anyone. In 2019, he thwarted the threat from Pakistan's pace battery featuring Shaheen Afridi and Mohammad Abbas to remain unbeaten on 335. This towering knock came in only 418 balls and was studded with a whopping thirty-nine fours and a six.
