India and Australia are two of the biggest powerhouses of the world cricket and whenever these two teams clash, there is a great sense of anticipation. The first Test of the current BGT went India's way and they registered a massive win of 295 runs. However, in the second Test at the Adelaide Oval, Australia returned the favour and hammered India by 10 wickets.
They have levelled the series with the win and it would be interesting to see how the series shapes up as Australia try to avoid a hattrick of Test series losses against India at home. Let's now see the top 5 shortest Tests between two teams in terms of balls bowled.
5. 1246 Balls - Adelaide Test, 2020
The fifth shortest Test match between India and Australia is the famous 36-all out one. It was a pink-ball Test match, the first one of the 2020-21 BGT. In the first innings, India scored 244 and batted 93 overs while Australia scored 191 and India took a valuable lead.
However, they were knocked over for just 36 and batted only 21 overs in the second innings and they Australia chased down the target of 91 in another 21 overs to make it a 1246-ball Test match, and one of the most heartbreaking one for Indian fans.
4. 1213 Balls - Wankhede Test, 2004
The Wankhede Test of the Australia tour to India in 2004 is one of the classics between the two nations. It was a low-scoring Test and India were bowled out for just 104 in 41-odd overs in the first innings. Australia took the lead of 99 runs with a good batting performance and India too improved their batting in the second outing, batting for 68.2 overs.
Australia crumbled big time in second innings with just 106 needed to win and were bowled out for 93 in 30.5 overs as the match was completed in 1213 balls.
3. 1200 Balls - WACA In Perth, 2012
The Perth Test, third one of the 2011-12 BGT comes third in the list as the match was completed in just 1200 balls. India lost by an innings and 37 runs that played a big role in it being a shortened game. Ben Hilfenhaus picked eight wickets in that Test as India were bowled out 161 and 171 in the first and second innings respectively.
Australia batted only once and scored at a rate of almost five per over which also contributed in it being a shortened game in terms of balls.
2. 1135 Balls - Indore Test, 2023
The Indore Test between India and Australia during the 2023 BGT on a rank-turner ranks second in the list of shortest Test matches between the two countries. The match lasted for only 1135 balls and Australia clinched that game by nine wickets. India batted only 33.2 overs in the first innings and were bowled out for just 109 while Australian batters displayed patience and crafted a healthy lead by batting 76.3 overs.
The Indian batting faltered again in the second innings as Lyon bagged eight wickets and then the visitors chased down the target of 78 in just 18.5 overs, making it a memorable win for Pat Cummins and co.
1. 1031 Balls - Adelaide Test 2024
The shortest Test in history between the two sides is the second game of the BGT 2024-25. A pink-ball Test in Australia turned out to be a disaster during the 2020-21 tour for India and it has turned out to be the same again. Indian batters could muster only 180 and 175 and the scoring rate of both the teams was quite good too.
Rohit Sharma and co. scored 180 in just 44 overs as Starc bamboozled them and then courtesy almost a run-a-ball 140 by Travis Head, Aussies notched up 337. In the second innings, India could bat just 36.5 overs and then Aussies chased down the target of 19 in 20 balls to make it just a 1031-ball Test match, 104 balls less than the second shortest.
