Australian cricketers have often dominated the Test format with their supreme talent and aggressive hitting. Back in the 80s and 90s, the Aussies were heavily dominant in red-ball cricket, with the likes of Ricky Ponting and Matthew Hayden hogging the limelight with impressive innings.

While the Australian batters have been invincible in home conditions, some players’ records in overseas conditions, especially in Asia, have been phenomenal and earned them a lot of praise.

As we discuss the Aussies' dominance, here's a list of 5 Australian batters who have scored a double century in Asia.

5. Matthew Hayden - 203 vs India, 2001

Matthew Hayden came out with his masterclass in the third Test against India held at Chennai way back in 2001. On a challenging pitch dominated by India’s spinners, Hayden’s aggressive yet calculated approach took on the likes of Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble.

His use of sweeps and powerful strokes helped him score a record 203 off 320 balls, including 15 boundaries and 6 sixes. This was a double century, which was only the fourth by an Australian in India, and helped Australia post a total of 391 runs.

4. Dean Jones - 210 vs India, 1986

Dean Jones' innings of 210 against India in the 1986 Madras Test (now Chennai) is one of the most iconic innings in Australian cricket history. Played in challenging conditions, this was a significant feat for Jones as the match was being played in sweltering heat, with temperatures soaring to over 40°C.

Despite suffering from severe heat exhaustion, Jones showcased tremendous mental and physical resilience. He slammed a sensational 210 off 330 balls, including 27 boundaries and 2 sixes to help Australia put 574 runs on the board. He was only the second Aussies at that time to hit a double ton in Asia.

3. Usman Khawaja -232 vs Sri Lanka, 2025

Usman Khawaja, a technically sound opening batter, smashed a double century against Sri Lanka in a Test held in January 2025. Khawaja and Steve Smith stitched a mammoth partnership of 266 runs for the third wicket.

After Smith's dismissal, Khawaja continued his carnage to slam 232 off 352 balls, including 16 fours and 1 six. Khawaja ended his lean patch to script history, becoming the fifth Australian player to slam a double ton in Asia. His inning put the Aussies in the driver's seat in the crucial first Test.

2. Greg Chappell - 235 vs Pakistan, 1980

In 1980, Greg Chappell delivered a sensational inning against Pakistan in a Test held at Faisalabad. He became the first Australian to hit a double century in Asia after he thumped 235 runs in 363 balls, including 21 fours.

He knitted a 217-run partnership with Graham Yallop to power Australia to a grand total of 617 in the first innings. The innings were notable not only for the sheer volume of runs but also for the way Chappell managed to wear down Pakistan’s bowlers, particularly their spin attack.

1. Mark Taylor - 334* vs Pakistan, 1998

Former Australian captain Mark Taylor scripted history when he slammed a triple century against Pakistan in 1998, that too in Asian conditions. Taylor’s innings of 334* off 564 balls, which remains his highest score in Test cricket, was a masterclass in patience and technique.

The Pakistan bowling attack, which included the legendary duo of Wasim Akram and Saqlain Mushtaq, was rendered ineffective as Taylor expertly handled both pace and spin. He became only the fifth Australian cricketer to slam a triple century in Test cricket and the third to slam a double ton in Asia.
