England has long been a cricketing powerhouse but even the best teams have their worst days. The fifth T20I against India at Wankhede on Sunday turned out to be one such nightmare as England folded for just 97 in 10.3 overs and it marked their shortest innings in international cricket.
Here’s a look at England’s five shortest international innings across formats
5. 16.4 overs – 88 all out vs West Indies, T20I (2011)
A forgettable T20I against West Indies at The Oval in 2011 saw England collapse in just 16.4 overs, chasing a modest target. The Windies had posted 113/5 in 20 overs, thanks to a disciplined bowling performance by England. However, the hosts’ batting lineup failed miserably, managing just 88 runs in reply.
Only four English batters reached double digits with Ben Stokes (31) providing some resistance. With the ball, Garey Mathurin spun a web around England’s lineup with three wickets and the 25-run defeat exposed England’s struggles against spin.

England had their T20I batting blown away in Bengaluru during their 2017 tour of India. Chasing a target of 203, the English batting order imploded in just 16.3 overs, getting bowled out for 127.
India’s Yuzvendra Chahal ran riot, picking up 6/25, which remains one of the best bowling performances in T20I history. England was in the chase at one stage, but Chahal’s magical spell sent them packing, handing India a massive 75-run victory.
3. 15.4 overs – 61 all out vs Australia, Tests (1902)
This was a Test match disaster dating back to 1902 at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). England, playing against arch-rivals Australia, put up one of their most embarrassing performances in Test cricket, getting bundled out for just 61 runs in 15.4 overs.
The Aussies had posted 112 in their first innings, and England looked set for a competitive contest. However, Hugh Trumble (3 wickets) and Monty Noble (7 wickets) ran through the English lineup, leaving them reeling. Despite a fightback in the second innings, England fell short by 229 runs, making this one of their most humiliating defeats.
2. 14.4 overs – 80 all out vs India, T20I (2012)

This match in the T20 World Cup 2012 was another low point for England’s batting. Chasing 171, they could only manage 80 runs in 14.4 overs, marking their lowest total in a T20 World Cup match at the time.
The collapse was triggered by Harbhajan Singh’s magical spell of 4/12, and England never recovered. India’s spin attack choked the scoring, and England’s batters looked clueless on a turning track in Colombo. Losing by 90 runs, it was a forgettable night for the English team.

The worst of the worst: England’s shortest-ever innings in international cricket came in the 5th T20I vs India in 2025 at Wankhede where they had to chase a mammoth 248 run target. They lasted just 10.3 overs, recording their fastest batting collapse ever.
Despite Phil Salt’s 55 off 23 balls, the rest of the lineup fell apart. The next-best score? Jacob Bethell’s 10(7). England’s batting simply couldn’t withstand India’s relentless bowling attack, as they fell 150 runs short of the target.
