On December 4 2025, English star batter Joe Root broke the century curse in the Down Under. In the ongoing Ashes series 2025-26, Root produced an all-important hundred against an all-pace Australian attack in the Gabba Test.

Precisely 13 years into his Test career, Root's 181-ball ton came at a much-needed point in the game. Coming in to bat when England were 5/2, the 34-year-old showcased why he is considered one of the best Test batters on the globe.

On that note, let's take a look at the list of batters with the most runs in the year 2025.

5) Joe Root - 714 runs

Courtesy of the historic hundred in the Pink-ball Gabba Test in the Ashes 2025-26, Joe Root went past the 700-run mark in the 2025. Many consider the English batter, Root in the twilight of his career, but his runs in the longest format of the game show something else.

With 4 centuries and 1 fifty throughout the year, Root has scored 701 runs in 2025, fifth most Test runs in the year. Sure, 701 runs in a single year is a good number, but for a batter of Root's calibre, it is below par. Previously, Joe Root has totalled as many as 1708 runs in 2021.

4) Yashasvi Jaiswal - 745 runs

The 23-year-old, opening for his nation in Tests, collected 745 runs in 10 matches and 19 innings.

A high average and prolific run-scoring marks Yashasvi Jaiswal's Test career. In 2025, the young batter smashed 3 tons and 3 fifties.

He made his debut in July 2023 and has quickly established himself as a key opener for India. As of November 2025, he has played 28 matches, scoring 2,511 runs at an average of 49.24.

3) Ravindra Jadeja - 764 runs

A surprise name on the list, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja's batting in the longest format of the game has been at its peak over the last few years, making him a very reliable batsman irrespective of conditions.

In 2025, Jadeja played 10 Tests, batting in 17 innings and scoring 764 runs, at an impressive average of 63.66. On top of that, the Indian veteran scored 2 tons and 6 fifties, that too in crucial moments for the country.

Notably, throughout the year, Jadeja has been a steady eddy for India in limited-overs cricket and has been a proven match-winner in home Tests.

2) KL Rahul - 813 runs

Amongst the few senior players in the Indian Test set-up this year, KL Rahul has led from the front. With an average of 45.16, Rahul accumulated as many as 813 runs throughout the 2025, the most runs in a single year for the wicket-keeper batter.

Former India captain Rohit Sharma's Test retirement made way for Rahul's promotion as the permanent opener for India. In 10 games, Rahul batted on 19 occasions, scoring three hundreds and three fifties in the year.

1) Shubman Gill - 983 runs

The newly appointed India captain, Shubman Gill, has had a time of his life in the year 2025. Runs with the bat and the indispensable responsibility as the skipper, Gill has had it all.

Playing 9 games and batting in 16 innings, the 26-year-old amassed 983 runs, most runs in Test in 2025. Moreover, his highest Test score, 269, coming in the same year. The highest individual score by an Indian captain in a Test match, Gill's 269, was a historic first-innings score in the second Test against England at Edgbaston in July 2025.
