Meanwhile, the ICC Test Player Ratings have long been a barometer for determining the excellence of cricketers in the traditional format of the game. Among the current crop of players, a few have achieved extraordinary ratings, placing them among the best to have ever played the game. 

On that note, here's a list of five current players with the best-ever ICC ratings in Test cricket.

New Zealand's Kane Williamson is one of the most technically sound batters in modern cricket. Williamson reached his highest ICC Test rating of 919 points in January 2021 while he was playing against Pakistan. Across 100 Tests, Kane has over 8700 runs to his name, including 32 centuries. 

Williamson's consistency across all conditions, coupled with his leadership skills, has been instrumental in New Zealand's rise in Test cricket, including their victory in the inaugural ICC World Test Championship.

Joe Root, the former England captain, reached his peak ICC Test rating of 923 points in July 2022 while hosting a series against India. Root, who has been the backbone of England's batting for nearly a decade, scored 737 runs in that five-game Test series to achieve his career-high rating. 

Needless to say, Root's consistency, especially in home conditions, led to a significant number of Test runs (12,027), placing him among England's all-time greats, and this rating is only a clear reflection of his impeccable talent.

Marnus Labuschagne burst onto the international scene as a substitute fielder, and established himself as one of the premier Test batters in following years. Labuschagne achieved his highest ICC Test rating of 937 points in December 2022. 

Marnus had scored 502 runs in two-game Test series against West Indies which included a double century and two hundreds. That stellar form led to a steep jump in his career rating.

2018 was by far the finest phase of Virat Kohli's extraordinary career, as he scored 11 centuries in less than 12 months. In the five-game away Test series against England in August, Kohli slammed a collective of 593 runs at an average of 59.30 to achieve his career-best ICC Test rating of 937 points. 

Kohli's career truly peaked in that phase as he not only excelled as a specialist batter but also led India to glory in challenging overseas conditions as a captain.

Steve Smith, the Australian batting maestro, achieved his highest-ever ICC Test rating of 947 points in December 2017, placing him alongside the greats of the game. Smith's unorthodox technique, combined with consistency, has made him one of the most difficult batters to dismiss in Test cricket. 

During the 2017-18 Ashes series, Smith scored a total of 687 runs in 7 innings at a 137.40 average, which propelled him to his career-best ICC Test rating.
