The fast-paced world of T20I cricket has prompted anchormen to become power-hitters, and attacking batters into burgeoning forces of brutal ball-strikers. The ability of clearing the ropes with ease has almost become a hallmark of modern-day batting, with certain players often excelling in the art of launching towering sixes.

Here at OneCricket, we take a look at five such international stars who have registered the highest number of sixes in T20I matches.

5. Suryakumar Yadav - 136 sixes

Explosive Indian batter Suryakumar Yadav made his T20I debut in March 2021 with a match against England. A couple of years later, the cricketer completed 100 sixes in just his 49th innings to become the second fastest batter in T20I history to do so.

The 34-year-old holds one of the best six-to-match ratios in world cricket, as he currently stands on an illustrious pile of 136 maximums in just 68 innings. Suryakumar’s T20I strike-rate of nearly 170 stands testament to his penchant of clearing the ropes at will.

4. Jos Buttler - 137 sixes

Senior Englishman and dashing wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler has launched 137 sixes to date in just 124 T20I matches. Opening the innings for England, the cricketer also headlined his nation’s historic title victory at the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia. Remarkably, Buttler has belted 43 of his 137 career sixes within the hallowed arena of T20 World Cups across six different editions.

Buttler’s six-hitting aura has helped him maintain a staggering strike-rate of nearly 150 in T20Is, all while holding an astonishing batting average of nearly 36.

3. Nicholas Pooran - 140 sixes

Serial six-hitter and West Indies batting marauder Nicholas Pooran has clobbered 140 maximums in his 97-match T20I career to date. The wicketkeeper-batter has also added 144 boundaries in his profile, which makes his six-hitting ratio one of the best in the business. Hailing from a cricket team which is engulfed with a long lineage of brutal T20 ball-strikers like Chris Gayle and Kieron Pollard among others; it is Pooran who stands the tallest among his nation’s steeped history with the game’s truncated format.

While he holds the third highest number of sixes in T20I cricket, the 28-year-old Trinidadian is currently the leading six-hitter in the world among all contemporary batters. With age on his side, the explosive left-hander might well double his tally by the time of his retirement.

2. Martin Guptill - 173 sixes

For long, New Zealand opener Martin Guptill held the record of hitting the highest number of sixes in T20I cricket until he was usurped by a certain Indian player in September 2022. Between his 13-year New Zealand journey that spawned 122 T20I matches, the prolific power-hitter smeared 173 sixes and over 300 additional boundaries. Guptill took a special liking to his home conditions in New Zealand, where he bludgeoned 112 of his 173 career sixes from just 56 innings.

While Martin Guptill confirmed his international retirement from New Zealand a couple of years ago, his fondness for clearing the ropes remains the same as evidenced by his worldwide T20 appearances in franchise cricket.

1. Rohit Sharma - 205 sixes

Indian opener Rohit Sharma remains the only batter in T20I history to have belted more than 200 sixes in his career. The modern-day batting legend breached the landmark figure during the 2024 T20 World Cup. Remarkably, the Indian captain announced his retirement mere moments after the conclusion of the tournament, thus finishing his T20I career with 205 sixes from just 159 matches.

Apart from leading the world’s six-hitting race in T20Is, Rohit Sharma is only the second highest six-hitter among all batters in T20 World Cup matches. Furthermore, he is also the leading six-hitter across all international formats with a combined tally of 620 maximums.
