Former Indian cricketer, Virender Sehwag has weighed in on SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) batter Harry Brook's comment regarding Indian fans who had been trolling him on social media. Sehwag has stated that the cricketer's primary job is to perform on the pitch and leave.
The swashbuckling batter had earlier been the subject of criticism from Indian fans due to his poor performances. However, after scoring a century in a match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Brook made a statement seemingly directed at his detractors.
While speaking to Cricbuzz after SRH’s thrilling win over Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Sunday, Sehwag advised Brook to avoid engaging with trolls on social media and instead focus on his performances. The former India opener emphasized that a player's primary duty is to come onto the field, work hard, perform, and then leave.
"Why would you mess with trolls? Why should you even look at who are trolling you or criticizing you or praising you? Your work is to come, work hard, perform and leave,” said Sehwag.
According to the erstwhile opener, social media is only meant for posting updates and not for reading comments, as these can affect a player's state of mind.
The Indian veteran further urged Brook to find his own space, such as by watching movies, listening to music, or hanging out with friends. By performing well, Sehwag added, even those who had earlier criticized the player would begin to praise him.
“Social media is not for watching anything, it is only a place for posting updates. Don't be afraid of them. And if you perform, even those you had trolled or criticized you, will now praise you,” concluded the legendary batter.
Meanwhile, SRH left Brook out of their playing XI for their match against RR which they thrillingly went on to win by four wickets. The Englishman was named as one of their impact subs but the Hyderabad-based franchise chose Anmolpreet Singh as the impact player.
The 24-year had been struggling for runs in the last five innings, with scores of 9, 18, 7, 0, and 0 before being dropped. Sehwag’s advice to focus on his game and ignore trolls may prove crucial for the English batter if he wants to regain his form and make an impact in the remainder of the tournament.
