The English superstar Ben Stokes had a day out at the Oval on Wednesday as he recorded the highest-ever score by an England player in ODI cricket by scoring a powerful 182 against New Zealand. The left-hander scored runs left, right and centre to demonstrate his strength as he struck 15 fours and nine sixes against the Kiwi bowlers.
Speaking after the game to former England World Cup-winning skipper Eoin Morgan, Stokes humorously apologised to his teammate and opener Jason Roy for breaking his record. To the unversed, before Stokes, Roy held the record for the highest score for Three Lions, which was his 180 that came against Australia in Melbourne, 2018.
"Really pleased. Apologise to Jason. He said 'well done' and I said 'sorry'. We (England Team) spoke about putting New Zealand under pressure and getting to a good start, and even after losing those early wickets, we wanted to be positive. Once we got going, we did not want them (bowlers) to settle."
Also, Stokes went on to praise Dawid Malan for his quality and strike rotation ability while mentioning that he missed his well-deserved milestone. Additionally, the all-rounder explained about his fitness, saying that he is better now as ODI's are less challenging than Tests.
"As experienced players, we need to guide the younger players. He (Malan) is a very consistent player, he is a very quality player, rotates the strike very well as well and missed out on the milestone after getting a strangle down leg. I am feeling much better (in terms of fitness), Test matches are a bit longer, but ODIs surely are not that demanding."
After this game, England and New Zealand will next meet on 15th September at Lord's, London, for the fourth and final ODI of the series, with the hosts leading by 2-1.
