The Ranji Trophy has thrown up some magnificent moments over the years and Umar Nazir Mir’s sensational spell against Mumbai is the latest to join the list. Jammu & Kashmir’s lanky pacer, standing tall at 6’4”, absolutely tore through Mumbai’s famed batting lineup, leaving them reeling at 41/5.

Big names like Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Hardik Tamore, and Shivam Dube all fell victim to his deadly bowling. But who is Umar Nazir, and how did he get here? Let’s dive in.

Who Is J&K Pacer Umar Nazir Mir?

Umar Nazir Mir hails from Malikpora, a small town in Pulwama, Jammu & Kashmir. With his huge frame and smooth bowling action, he has been a nightmare for batters on the domestic circuit. Inspired by Australian great Glenn McGrath, Umar has always dreamt of playing for Team India. And after performances like this, it’s safe to say he’s making a strong case for himself.

For years, Umar has been grinding it out in domestic cricket. His journey hasn’t been easy, but his talent has never been in doubt. Whether it’s his ability to swing the ball both ways or his knack for hitting the perfect length, Umar’s skills have always stood out.

Umar’s Domestic Cricket Numbers Speak Volumes

Umar isn’t just a one-match wonder. He has been quietly making a name for himself in domestic cricket. With 57 first-class matches under his belt, he’s picked up 138 wickets at an average of 29.12. His best performance is a stunning 6/53 vs Services last year, the kind of spell that can turn a match on its head. Add to that his experience in List A and T20 cricket, and you’ve got a bowler who knows how to handle pressure.

This season, Umar has been on fire. In just three Ranji Trophy matches, he’s bagged 11 wickets at an incredible average of 9.81. His economy rate of 2.64 and strike rate of 22.27 show just how dangerous he’s been. Against Mumbai, he was unstoppable, running through their top order like a hot knife through butter.

Facing a formidable team like Mumbai is never easy but Umar made it look like a walk in the park. He set the tone by dismissing Indian skipper Rohit Sharma for just three runs. Rohit struggled throughout his short stay with Umar keeping him on a tight leash.

Then came Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane who also fell to Umar’s brilliance. By the time he was done, Umar had four wickets to his name and Mumbai’s batting lineup was in shambles.

Meanwhile, despite his domestic success, Umar has yet to bag an IPL contract. He has been in multiple auctions but hasn’t been picked up, something that might change after this season. After all, IPL teams are always on the lookout for bowlers who can deliver under pressure and Umar has shown he’s got what it takes.
