The highly awaited return of Indian skipper Rohit Sharma to Ranji Trophy cricket after a decade didn’t quite go as planned. Fans were excited to see the veteran cricketer back in domestic action, but it turned into a day to forget for Rohit and Mumbai alike.

Umar Nazir Gave Rohit a Tough Time

Facing Jammu and Kashmir at Mumbai, Rohit Sharma managed to score just 3 runs off 19 deliveries before being sent packing by an on-fire Umar Nazir.

From the get-go, it was clear Rohit was struggling to get his rhythm. Umar Nazir, bowling with intent, kept the Indian skipper on edge. Rohit seemed like a shadow of his former self as Umar bowled back-to-back maidens, making him work hard for every run.

The duel between the two ended in the third over when Umar Nazir bowled a good-length delivery outside off that kicked up a bit. Rohit tried to guide it to the leg side, but a leading edge carried straight to the mid-off fielder. It was a soft dismissal, and Nazir’s celebration said it all – he had outfoxed one of India’s finest batters.

A Worrying Patch for Rohit Sharma

Rohit’s recent form, especially in red-ball cricket, has been far from ideal. The recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy saw the Indian veteran struggle with the bat, and his decision to skip the fifth Test only added fuel to the fire.

In order to find his groove ahead of the crucial England series, Rohit decided to turn to the Ranji Trophy. But if this innings is anything to go by, the bad patch seems to be continuing.

Fans didn’t hold back on social media. While some sympathized with the skipper, others were less forgiving. There were trolls aplenty, and some even criticized Mumbai’s decision to drop Ayush Mhatre – who scored a century in the last game – to make room for Rohit in the XI.

Here's a look at a few reactions:

Jaiswal Fails, Mumbai in Trouble

Rohit wasn’t the only batter to have a bad day at the office. Young sensation Yashasvi Jaiswal also fell cheaply, managing just 4 runs before being dismissed. Mumbai’s top order looked shaky as they found themselves reeling at 12/2 after just six overs.

Now, the responsibility falls on Hardik Tamore and skipper Ajinkya Rahane to steady the ship. With the kind of start J&K bowlers have had, Mumbai will need a herculean effort to get back in the game.
