Torrent Group is all set to take over Gujarat Titans (GT). The business giant is buying a 67% stake in the 2022 IPL champions from CVC Capital Partners.
Torrent Group Buys Majority Stake In Gujarat Titans
If all goes well, Torrent will officially be in charge from the IPL 2025 season, which kicks off on March 21. While the final paperwork is still being processed by the IPL governing council, this move is all but done.
Gujarat Titans’ new owners are ready to step in and shake things up. And why not? This franchise has already tasted major success in a very short time.
Gujarat Titans’ Fairytale Journey
Let’s take a quick look at GT’s crazy journey so far. CVC Capital bought the franchise in 2021 for INR 5625 crore (around $750 million). Nobody really knew what to expect from them, but GT came in swinging.
They won the IPL title in 2022 on their debut. The next year, they made it to the final but fell just short. 2024 wasn’t the best for them, as they finished eighth.
Their home is the Narendra Modi Stadium, the world’s largest cricket stadium with a staggering capacity of over 100,000.
Torrent Group’s Cricket Dream Finally Comes True
Torrent Group has been eyeing cricket for a while now. In 2021, they tried their luck in the BCCI’s big auction for new IPL teams. They bid big for Ahmedabad (INR 4653 crore) and Lucknow (INR 4356 crore), but missed out. In 2023, they made another attempt during the Women’s Premier League (WPL) bidding, but couldn’t land a team there either.
This time, though, it’s a different story. Torrent is finally getting into the IPL, and they’re not just dipping their toes, they’re going all in with Gujarat Titans. Jinal Mehta, son of Torrent’s chairman emeritus Sudhir Mehta, will be leading the charge for their IPL plans. With a business empire valued at INR 41,000 crore, Torrent is a serious player.
New owners might be coming in, but Gujarat Titans’ squad is as strong as ever. Led by India’s batting prodigy Shubman Gill, they’ve got some serious match-winners in their lineup. Rashid Khan is still spinning webs around batters, Jos Buttler adds explosive firepower, and Mohammed Siraj brings the heat with his pace.
With Torrent Group stepping in, things are going to get interesting. Will they bring new strategies? Will they make big player moves? One thing’s for sure, they’ll want to see Gujarat Titans back on top of the table. The IPL 2025 season is just around the corner, and the buzz is already building.
