Rohit Sharma was unexpectedly removed from the ODI captaincy spot by chief selector Ajit Agarkar before the all-important Australia series. Rohit was the captain of the team that won the T20 World Cup in 2024 and the Champions Trophy this year, but despite all the laurels, he was sacked abruptly by the management.
The Indian cricket fans have speculated that there is a rift between Rohit and chief selector Agarkar, and as a result, the Mumbai batter was removed from the captaincy position and was given an ultimatum to prove his fitness.
Recently, an old video went viral, wherein Rohit Sharma, who represented Deccan Chargers in the IPL tormented Agarkar and his team with brute hitting.
The day Rohit made mockery of Agarkar and KKR
It was the 48th match of the Indian Premier League (2009) season, and KKR posted 160/5 after batting first. On a tricky Wanderers wicket, the KKR batters struggled as the Chargers needed 161 to clinch the victory. During those days, Rohit used to bat in the middle order, as the youngster had the onus to steer his team to victory.
In a tricky run-chase, Rohit started his magnificent innings with a boundary off Agarkar, as the now chief selector, bowled a fuller length ball, and Rohit clipped it past the deep square leg region. At one stage, the Chargers needed 27 off 12 when Rohit and his batting partner took just 6 runs off the penultimate over.
After a brilliant over, Ajit Agarkar might have thought that the game was done and dusted as DC needed 21 off the last over. But that day, Rohit showed Agarkar and KKR about his mettle as a finisher as the youngster smacked Bangladesh pacer, Mashrafe Mortaza, for 21 runs in the last over, as he hammered 4, 6, 4, 6 to seal an emphatic win that brought the KKR side to its knees.
While Rohit remained unbeaten at 32 off 13, Agarkar, in the same match, conceded 41 runs in 4 overs and became one of the main reasons why KKR lost the match.
