The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 is commencing with the high-voltage encounter between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) this evening, which promises to be a thrilling encounter that adds to the folklore around it.

Over the years, both teams have had some nail-biting finishes, with no better than the encounter during the 2019 IPL edition, where Mahendra Singh Dhoni almost got Chennai over the line against Bengaluru in M.Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Parthiv Patel's quick-fire 53 off 37 ensured Royal reached a par score and asked the Kings to chase down 162. Chennai were rocked by Umesh Yadav, and Dale Steyn, who reduced their opponents to 28 for four, which prompted Dhoni to take charge in the middle.

Dhoni found support in former CSK player Ambati Rayudu, where the pair added 55 runs off 44, which both contributed equal runs. Dhoni's stand with Ravindra Jadeja also lasted for 21 balls, after which the former CSK captain had to single-handedly get his franchise near the closing line.

The 42-year-old kept his side in the hunt, adding 28 and 24 runs stand with Dwayne Bravo and Shardul Thakur, respectively.

Dhoni's 24-run stand with Thakur came in the last over, where CSK needed 26 to win. The explosive finisher started to milk Yadav for runs, hitting four, six, six, two, and six in the first five balls.

Unfortunately, needing two off the ultimate delivery, Dhoni in a bid to run a quick single and take the contest into a super-over, ran for a bye, where Thakur was found short of the cease, as Patel, who scored the most runs for RCB, ran the latter out, dashing hopes of CSK and their fans.

Eventually, Dhoni remained not-out for 84 off 48 balls, but the Virat Kohli-led side won the thriller by 1 run.
