Shubman Gill became the first captain to be fined for slow over rate in the IPL 2024. The IPL committee penalised the Gujarat Titans' skipper after his team was found guilty of lagging behind in over rate during their clash against Chennai Super Kings.

"Shubman Gill, the Gujarat Titans captain, has been fined after his team maintained a slow over rate during their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on March 26. As it was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over rate offences, Gill was fined ₹12 lakh," the official statement read.

Gill, one of the youngest IPL captains, assumed GT's leadership responsibilities after Hardik Pandya's all-cash trade to Mumbai Indians.

The young Indian opener commenced the IPL campaign this year with a victory over Mumbai Indians, captained by Hardik Pandya, on GT's home turf. However, Gill and the Titans faced a setback in their second game, suffering a defeat to CSK in Chennai.

Gujarat Titans' bowlers faced a relentless assault from Rachin Ravindra and Shivam Dube, leading to a formidable total set by CSK. Despite their efforts, GT's batters couldn't successfully chase the imposing target, resulting in a disappointing 63-run loss for the team.
