Cricketers often rank among the most well-compensated athletes globally. However, a former Pakistan cricketer, revered as one of the best bowlers during his era, experienced a stark reversal of fortune, leading to the complete depletion of his amassed wealth. The consequence was a prolonged period of grappling to secure basic necessities. This cricketer is none other than the Pakistani spin bowler, Arshad Khan.
Arshad Khan's Story From Pakistan Cricketer to Taxi Driver
Arshad, one of the best spin bowlers of his team, was a part of the Pakistan cricket team from 1998 to 2006. He was primarily recognised for his off-spin bowling style and his ability to contribute with the bat in lower-order batting positions. He represented Pakistan in both Test matches and ODIs. He also played quite a few matches against India and has dismissed batsmen like Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh among others.
However, after joining an unsanctioned cricket tournament called the Indian Cricket League (ICL), Arshad fell in trouble. He was not allowed to play for Pakistan any more. Following his cricket career, Arshad faced financial difficulties and struggled to make ends meet. His story highlighted the lack of proper financial planning and support for many former cricketers after retirement.
At one point, Arshad had to sell his property in Pakistan and moved to Sydney in Australia to work as a taxi driver. He was spotted driving a taxi in Sydney in 2020, and upon knowing this, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) offered him the job of bowling coach for Pakistan Women’s National Cricket Team.
