India’s Squad for Asia Cup 2023 Could be Announced Before 20th August: Reports

Asia Cup 2023 is only 14 days away, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to announce India’s squad for the tournament. Beginning on August 30, the 50-over tournament will be co-hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

The announcement for the squad has reportedly been delayed because the board wants to give some more time to the injured players – KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer - to prove their fitness. The squad announcement might be made by the end of the on-going week.

Recently, Ravi Ashwin revealed on his YouTube channel that KL Rahul has been batting in the nets at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore. Iyer, too, has resumed batting in the nets. While Rahul got injured during Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, Iyer injured himself much before the IPL and has not played any competitive cricket since March.

“Keeping 50 overs in Sri Lankan heat would take a toll and NCA can only give him (Rahul) fit certificate if he is able to don the big gloves without any apparent discomfort. Also, they haven’t played anything and the first international game against Pakistan (on September 2) could be a bit too much of a pressure. But then time is of essence," PTI quoted a BCCI source as saying.

Pakistan will take on Nepal in the opening match of the 2023 Asia Cup in Multan. The tournament has six teams divided into two groups of three teams each. Pakistan, India and Nepal are in Group A while Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka are in Group B. The big game between India and Pakistan is set for September 2 in Kandy.
