Virat Kohli may have missed out after a patient knock of 38 in the first-innings of the Boxing Day Test in Centurion but the modern-day maestro remains one of India's most formidable batters against the South Africans.

Kohli boasts of a tremendous record versus the Proteas with a whopping 1,274 runs made in 15 Tests at an exceptional average of 55.22, including three centuries and four half-centuries with a best of 254 not out.

The veteran right-hander's highest score against the South Africans arrived during the second Test of the 2019 home series in Pune. Forging a marathon effort in the middle, Kohli top-scored and took India to a mammoth 601/5 declared in a resounding innings victory for the hosts.

When Kohli Gave Funny Reaction To Maharaj

Unleashing his dominance in the middle for close to two days, Kohli left the Proteas in a hapless state, piling on their misery over 336 deliveries. The knock was played on a traditional Indian slow turner, which was far from a flat road, a sign of which arrived through a hilarious moment on Day 2 of the Test match.

Kohli, who has always been an expressive and entertaining character, gave a hilarious reaction when opposition left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj turned one sharply past his outside edge and nearly dismissed the well-set right-hander.

Watching the delivery, Kohli recognised he was lucky to survive without it taking the splice of his willow and landing into the slip's hands. The batter therefore stood in awe of the peach of a delivery Maharaj produced, wearing a look of utter surprise but also praise on his face for what had transpired.

But most importantly for Kohli, the delivery didn't ruffle up his psyche or forced the batter to do something extraordinary in response as he continued his magnificent knock and made sure India could bat South Africa out of the contest.
