Virat Kohli underwent one of the worst phases of his career from 2020 until the halfway stage of 2022. The legendary Indian cricketer struggled to put runs on the board, be it for Team India across all international formats or for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in IPL.

Kohli failed to register a single century during this period throughout all competitive levels, and endured one of his worst seasons in IPL (average wise) in 2022 for the RCB. The franchise veteran managed to score just 341 runs in 16 IPL 2022 innings, and maintained a substandard average of 22.73 with two half-centuries to his name.

His English batting rival and Rajasthan Royals opener Jos Buttler, on the other hand, bludgeoned 863 runs in IPL 2022 to secure the coveted ‘Orange Cap’ that year.

During an interview with Star Sports, Virat Kohli hilariously recalled his IPL 2022 interaction with Jos Buttler when the latter sought him for tips, even though the Englishman was at the peak of his batting prowess at the time.

Virat Kohli mocks himself to praise Jos Buttler

During an interview, RCB veteran Virat Kohli recalled an interaction he had with Jos Buttler after his side’s IPL 2022 match against Rajasthan Royals. Kohli said that he was approached by Buttler following the conclusion of the game, where the then Orange Cap holding Englishman was asking him for some batting tips.

The legendary Indian batsman hilariously revealed that he responded back by mocking his own torrid run with the bat, and added that the latter does not need any advice because he is wearing the ‘Orange Cap’. Kohli recalled:

“Jos Buttler aaye, Rajasthan ke match ke baad. Kehte hai mujhe kuch puchna hai. Mene kaha tere sar pe orange cap lagi hui hai aur tu mujhse puch raha hai, mujhse toh ek bhi run nahi ban raha."

Thankfully for Virat Kohli and Indian fans, the cricketer did regain his lost rhythm during the backend of 2022. He even finished the recently-concluded 2023 World Cup as its highest run-getter, and is currently bracing himself for a tough two-match Test series in South Africa.

Kohli distanced himself from India’s white-ball tour of South Africa, and will return to the national line-up in time for the first Test, scheduled to commence from December 26 onwards.
