India received their biggest blow after fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out of the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup next month. Bumrah, who featured for India in their T20I series against Australia, complained of back spasms on the eve of the first T20I against South Africa.

Bumrah made a return from injury after missing most of the 2022 season, which included the Asia Cup 2022, and sees  a relapse of his stress fracture. Paceman Mohammed Siraj has been added to the India's squad for the remaining two T20Is against South Africa.

Former India opener Wasim Jaffer speaking with ESPNCricinfo, felt that India might have rushed the 28-year-old back on the field against Australia, which did more damage to him than expected.

Jaffer on Bumrah's injury

"The stress fracture might have been there already; not to that extent, but it probably got worse after him playing a couple of games under that pressure. They kind of jumped the gun too early or made him play those games a little early,"

Jaffer mentioned that team management could have given Bumrah more time to get  back to full fitness in hindsight.

"I just feel that probably in hindsight, I would say whether they have rushed him into playing against Australia, if at all I can say that. He might have taken a bit more time and probably got ready for the World Cup. I don't know the seriousness of the injury but that's what I feel, whether they kind of pushed him too early to play and then obviously, it reoccurred.
