Born in Nagpur, Rohit Sharma was raised by his grandparents in Borivali, suburban Mumbai. As a child, he practiced at the Azad Maidan in central Bombay. Sharma would travel daily from Borivali to Churchgate via crowded local trains for his practice. In an episode of Breakfast with Champions, the Indian captain recalled the struggles of traveling by local trains, and how his kit bag fell off the train and was never found again.

“I used to travel from Borivali to Churchgate every day with my kit bag. And you know how tough it is to catch a train to Churchgate, it is impossible. Always overcrowded, people falling off. My practice was at the oval ground or Azad maidan,” Sharma said.

“While traveling by the local train, I had a few adventures as well. Once I tried to get on the train by acting like a small, innocent kid and telling the passengers that I had to go for a match. But they asked me to go to the goods and luggage bogie instead. I begged and pleaded, and some guys finally let me in. But I was right at the door. There was lots of pushing and shoving. In all that, I lost control. My kit bag had wheels. The bag was too heavy for me and the wheels slipped and the bag fell off the train,” the batsman added.

Rohit went onto add that he went to search his bag alongside railway tracks but could not find it and was punished in the academy as well as he got late for his training.

“I got down at Dadar station and got a slow train back to Mahim station. I walked along the tracks to look for it but the bag wasn’t anywhere. No one could believe I lost my kit bag in such a way. I reached my training late and was punished by sir. He didn’t allow me to bat, so I started fielding.”

These are the struggles that make one a strong character and currently, Rohit Sharma is one of the best batters in the world. He is also captain of India across formats and would go down as one of the greatest.
