Afghanistan pacer, Fazalhaq Farooqi has been roped in by the Sydney Thunder as a replacement overseas player for the upcoming Big Bash League season.

Farooqi has replaced England's David Willey, who withdrew from the competition after being drafted by Sydney Thunder as a platinum player in the inaugural BBL overseas draft.

Farooqi was impressive in the recently concluded T20 World Cup. He bowled particularly well against England, picking up 1 for 24 and against Australia, where he scalped 2 for 29, and bowled at an economy of just 6.52 runs per over.

Thunder manager stated that they are delighted to have the services of Farooqi after Willey withdrew from the tournament.

"Fazalhaq Farooqi is an emerging talent. He joins Thunder in great form after playing exceptional cricket in T20 World Cup and Asia Cup.

While it was disappointment to lose David Wiley, it has opened the door for Farooqi to enhance his reputation and status in world cricket," Andrew Gilchrist, Thunder general manager said.

Gilchrist further added: "Afghanistan has enjoyed a tremendous representation in BBL over the years. Rashid Khan has been embraced by Adelaide Strikers fans as a genuine superstar, while other players like Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Qais Ahmad, Noor Ahmad, Mohammad Nabi have also made their mark."
