In a conversation at the ICC event 'Afternoon With Test Legends', Rohit Sharma - alongside Pat Cummins, Ross Taylor, and Ian Bell - shed light on the pinnacle of India's Test cricket journey over the past couple of years.

Amidst a tumultuous backdrop characterized by the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the confining nature of bio-secure bubbles, Rohit hailed India's remarkable 2-1 win in Australia during the 2020-21 tour as the crowning achievement.

India’s tour began with a devastating setback as they succumbed to a measly total of 36 runs in the first Test at Adelaide. Subsequently, an onslaught of injuries plagued the squad, rendering several key players unable to participate in the series decider in Brisbane.

Reflecting upon the team's arduous journey, Rohit pointed to the enthralling conquest Down Under as the epitome of their resilience. Acknowledging the tribulations posed by the pandemic-induced bubbles, the Indian skipper credited the younger members of the team for their instrumental roles in reversing the tide of fortune.

"The last couple of years, specially after Covid-19, you know the times weren't that great. Stuck indoors and the younger boys were quite upset about that. But again, you need to beat the odds and come out on top. I thought the way we played in Australia was probably the top highlight, I would say," said Rohit.

Rohit added that undeterred by the defeat in Adelaide, the Indian side displayed immense determination, underscoring the depth and mettle of their squad. Additionally, he stated that the absence of numerous senior players further underscored the significance of the young guns' contributions, resulting in what Sharma deemed as India's finest display on foreign soil.

"After losing the first Test match in Adelaide and then coming back to win, that shows the strength and the depth of the team as well because we had lot of injuries on that trip. A lot of senior players were missing on that trip and that was certainly the best we played outside India," concluded the 36-year-old.

Following their abysmal batting display in Adelaide, India's hopes were dampened further with the absence of their skipper Virat Kohli, for the remainder of the series.

However, it was the leadership of stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane that rekindled the team's spirit, as he showcased his mettle with a resolute century at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground. Subsequently, Rishabh Pant, with his scintillating performance at The Gabba, guided India to a momentous three-wicket victory in the decisive Test match.
