The greatest player produced by India, Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar was a prodigy and till date, the skills that he possesses, the endurance level has not been matched by anyone else.

He announced his arrival by smacking four sixes in a row to Pakistan leg-spinner, Abdul Qadir in a charity match, but that was just a glimpse of his natural talent. However, it was during the 1990 tour of England, where the Little Master, made a name for himself by scoring a match-saving Test ton against England.

Remembering Tendulkar masterclass on eve of Independence day

It was on the eve of Independence day when Tendulkar saved a great Indian batting collapse at Manchester. It was a knock which will always be etched in the history of Indian cricket.

India lost the first Test at Lord's with Sachin, himself struggling in that Test match, with scores of 10, 27. Coming into the Manchester Test, India were in immense pressure, and it intensified during the game as England 519 in their first innings.

Sachin, however, came to India's rescue in the first innings, scoring a gritty 68 as India conceded a lead of 87. In the second Innings, India needed a mammoth 408 runs to level the series.

In those days, chasing anything in excess of 300 was a big task, and so, India had an uphill battle. Team India had a fragile batting lineup, and the former India captain, Tendulkar once again stood tall against the English bowler and scored a magnificent 119 from 189 balls to save India's blushes.

He came in at number 6 to bat, and at one stage, the visitors were on the bring of defeat, tottering at 183/6. From there on, he stitched a crucial partnership with Manoj Prabhakar as India avoided series defeat in Old Trafford, Manchester.

At aged 17 years and 112 days, Sachin became the third youngest player to score a Test century.
