On Tuesday, August 13, the Mumbai Cricket Association announced that star India batter Shreyas Iyer will be playing for Mumbai in the upcoming Buchi Babu tournament.

He will feature in a solitary game for Mumbai against Jammu & Kashmir and play alongside Suryakumar Yadav.

"Shreyas Iyer will play for Mumbai at the Buchi Babu Invitational tournament organized by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association. He will be playing vs Jammu & Kashmir from 27th August at Coimbatore," MCA jt secretary Deepak Patil.

In the latest events, the MCA chief selector has remarked that it was Iyer who showed keenness to play for Mumbai as he is eyeing a return to red-ball cricket.

"Shreyas Iyer has shown keen interest in playing for Mumbai. He's eager to play red-ball cricket," reported Mid-Day.

Iyer suffered back spasms during England tour earlier this year, following which the BCCI asked him to feature in Ranji Trophy. Meanwhile, Iyer, despite being medically cleared, chose to skip the Ranji games, citing his back issues. This decision did not sit well with the BCCI and they dropped him from the central contract list for the 2024-25 season.

Iyer last featured against England in January 2025, and would look to make a comeback as the Rohit Sharma-led side will play Test series against Bangladesh and then the important Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
