On this day, in 2014, India created history, winning their second-ever Test at the iconic Lord's after a gap of 28 years, since beating England for the first time at the venue in 1986. Pacer Ishant Sharma displayed an inspiring spell of fast bowling, claiming a career-best of seven for 74, enabling India to a 95-run victory on Day 5 of the Test.

Prelude

After drawing the first Test at Nottingham, both teams headed to London, which was the venue for the second Test in India's five-match tour of England.

Asked to bat by England skipper Alastair Cook, India managed 295 runs in their first innings, courtesy of Ajinkya Rahane's 103, and some late-order resistance by Bhuvneshwar Kumar (36).

Kumar (6-for) then toyed with England batters, as they managed just 319 runs, with Gary Ballance scoring 110, taking a mere 24-run lead.

Murali Vijay (95), Kumar (52), and Ravindra Jadeja (68) starred for India as they set England a target of 319 runs to win in almost four sessions.

England started off poor with Sam Robson's departure early, but Ballance and Cook steadied ship.

However, the fall of Ballance witnessed the rise of Sharma, who claimed the wickets of Ian Bell and Cook an over apart and managed to put England on the back foot immediately, heading into Day 5.

Needing 214 to win on Day 5, Joe Root and Moeen Ali added 100 runs in quick time as England's crossed the 150-run mark with ease.

With lunch on the horizon, Sharma's well-directed bouncer gets Ali for 39 and then has Matt Prior play a pull-shot straight into the hands of Vijay.

England crumbled like a pack of cards post lunch, as Sharma claimed wickets of Ben Stokes, Stuart Broad, and Liam Plunkett, all playing false shots, to finish with figures of seven for 74 in 23 overs.

All of England's final six wickets came within under a span of 50 runs, where Sharma displayed excellent use of the old ball and was unwavering in his short-ball strategy.

Despite taking a 1-0 lead, India went on to lose the remaining three Tests by thumping margins to England and lost the series 3-1 eventually.
