On Saturday, Punjab Kings added BBL sensation Matthew Short to their squad for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League. Short, who top-scored for Adelaide Strikers, replaces Jonny Bairstow in the Kings' squad.

Notably, Short played a pivotal role for Adelaide Strikers in the twelfth season of the Big Bash League, garnering 458 runs, including a century, at a magnificent strike rate of 144.47.

His incredible ability to maul both pace and spin became the talk of the town, while his useful off-breaks earned him plaudits from all around the world.

So, considering his all-round attributes, fans and experts have called it a masterstroke from Punjab Kings to replace Bairstow with the dynamic Australian for the IPL 2023.

However, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra doesn't seem convinced with Short's selection for the showpiece event.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra, despite rating Short's batting highly, raised doubts over his chances of clicking in the IPL, citing his BBL mates' failure to make their mark in the previous editions of the tournament.

Here's what Chopra stated

"Jonny Bairstow is no longer a part of this team. Matthew Short has been taken in his place. Matthew Short is the same guy who plays for the Adelaide Strikers - opens the batting, bowls off-spin and he is coming after setting the BBL on fire,

"Matthew Short is an opener and can bowl off-spin. We shall find out if his off-spin will work in these conditions but he is a good batter. However, it is also true that at times players who have excelled in the BBL are unable to perform that well after coming here."

Led by Shikhar Dhawan, Punjab Kings will kickstart their IPL campaign against Kolkata Knight Riders in Mohali on April 1.
