Rohit Sharma created a colossal record in his name back on November 13, 2014, at the iconic Eden Gardens against Sri Lanka. It was the fourth match of the ODI series when Rohit became the first person to score two double centuries in the format.

It was a mix of luck, skill, and raw power that helped the former India skipper create history. It is to be noted that his innings could have ended at just 4 runs if Thisara Perera had not dropped a regulation catch at third man.

As fate would have it, that catch turned out to be the costliest drop in ODIs as Rohit punished Sri Lanka with 33 fours and 9 sixes. The comeback match for Rohit Sharma after a finger injury he sustained in August that year elaborated his pain and his journey in a tale of catharsis.

As Sri Lanka fell short with only 251 runs in response to India’s 404, Rohit Sharma also broke several unprecedented records that day, underlining the legacy he was about to create.

1) One of only the eight double centuries in ODI cricket history

264 was Rohit’s second double hundred of his career. Earlier, Rohit had hit an unbeaten 209 off 222 deliveries against Australia on November 2, 2013.

2) Highest strike rate among all double hundreds in ODI cricket

Rohit also had a strike rate of 152.6 in that innings, which is the highest strike rate among all eight double hundred scores recorded in ODI cricket.

3) Highest number of boundaries in an ODI innings

Rohit smashed 33 boundaries in the innings, which is also the highest number of boundaries in an ODI innings. The second-highest belongs to Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar during their double hundreds, as they each hit 25 boundaries.

4) Joint fifth-highest in terms of number of deliveries faced in an ODI innings

Rohit Sharma also faced the joint fifth-highest number of deliveries in an ODI innings. He faced 173 deliveries in Kolkata, while Glenn Turner tops the list with 201 deliveries against East Africa and 177 deliveries against India in Manchester.

5) Most runs from boundaries and sixes in an ODI innings

Rohit Sharma also scored 186 runs from fours and sixes in an innings, which is the most ever done by a cricketer in the ODI format.

6) Third-highest percentage of team runs in a completed ODI innings

Rohit Sharma contributed 65.34% of India’s total runs in a completed ODI innings. Viv Richards scored 69.48% of West Indies’ total of 272 against England in 1984, while Kapil Dev’s unbeaten 175 stands second with 65.78% against Zimbabwe in 1983.

7) Maximum difference between the highest and the second-highest individual score in an ODI innings

Rohit Sharma also recorded the maximum difference between the highest and the second-highest individual score in an ODI innings, which is 198 runs. The second-highest score for India when Rohit recorded 264 was Virat Kohli’s 66.

8) Lucky No. 13 coincidence

All of Rohit Sharma’s double hundreds have the number 13 linked with them. The unlucky 13 turned lucky for the Indian veteran as his three double hundreds are all associated with that numeral. He scored his first double hundred against Australia on November 2, 2013. The difference between Rohit Sharma’s score and Sri Lanka’s total of 251 in the match is also 13.
