The ongoing first Test between New Zealand and Sri Lanka at Christchurch has already been a memorable one for several players. Former Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews entered the record books on Day 1, after he surpassed 7,000 Test runs, becoming only the third Lankan player after Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene to this milestone.

Playing in his 101st Test, Mathews achieved this landmark tally by taking a double off Matt Henry. Sadly, he was dismissed on the next ball, handing a simple catch to the first slip for a well-made 47.

Most Test Runs For Sri Lanka

  • Kumar Sangakkara - 12,400
  • Mahela Jayawardene - 11,814
  • Angelo Mathews - 7,000
  • Sanath Jayasuriya - 6,973
  • Aravinda de Silva - 6,361

The 35-year-old made his Test debut back in 2009, and has 13 centuries and 38 fifties, apart from 7,000 runs.

The all-rounder has also featured in 218 ODIs, and 78 T20Is.

Asked to bat first, Sri Lanka lost Oshada Fernando early on, before captain Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Mendis consolidated.

Mathews added 82 runs with Dinesh Chandimal for the fourth wicket before Sri Lanka suffered a mini-collapse.

As of writing, Sri Lanka are 305 for 6 with Dhananjaya de Silva and Kasun Rajitha batting in the middle on 39* and 16*, respectively.
