New Zealand skipper Tim Southee created history on Thursday when the Black Caps took on visiting Sri Lanka in the first Test at Christchurch. Southee equalled former captain Daniel Vettori's Test tally of 361 wickets to become New Zealand's joint-second highest wicket-taker, just behind Sir Richard Hadlee (431).
Southee claimed two wickets in Sri Lanka's first innings on Day 1 after he won the toss and asked Lanka to bat.
The 34-year-old also drew level with Vettori in another exciting statistic, picking up the most wickets for New Zealand combined in all three formats.
Vettori and Southee have 705 international scalps each; however, the former claimed nine wickets for ICC World XI and 696 for the Kiwis.
The pacer picked up the crucial wicket of Kusal Mendis to attain this milestone, who was batting wonderfully on 87.
Earlier, Southee got Oshada Fernando out in his fourth over to hand New Zealand a good start.
As of writing, Sri Lanka were 218 for 3, with former skippers Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal batting on 33* and 28*, respectively.
