What is the Impact Player rule?

In IPL 2023, every franchise will have to name five substitute players along with their playing XIs at the toss.

During the match, the teams can replace a player from any of these five substitute options with the following conditions:

  • A player can only be substituted at the start of the innings, after an over finishes, at the fall of a wicket and when a batter retires.
  • The replaced player cannot take further part in the match. 
  • The substitute can bat and ball irrespective of the fact if the replaced player has batted or how many overs he has bowled.
  • In case the fielding team brings in the Impact Player when a batter gets dismissed or retired midway through an over, he cannot bowl that particular over.
  • Also, an Impact Player can only be an Indian if a team includes four overseas players in their starting XI. If there are three or less foreigners in the first-choice XI, a non-Indian can also be an Impact Player.
